In most communities, poverty is a major impediment to civic involvement and educational advancement. In fact, library usage in towns throughout New Jersey is lowest in urban centers - where a large percentage of the people are living below the poverty line (Chart 4).

A considerable chunk of Asians in New Jersey are poor, with school-aged children representing the vast majority of the impoverished (Chart 5). Also, Asian households are typically larger than others, which also contributes to high poverty levels (Chart 6).
